Description

Fabien Duveau Saumur-Champigny Bas Poyeux is a Cabernet Franc from a thin-soiled parcel of one of the appellation's finest slopes, planted in 1960.

Poyeux is one of the best known lieux-dits of Saumur-Champigny, a slope where the sandy clay topsoil thins almost to nothing over tuffeau limestone and vines are forced to root into the rock. The Bas Poyeux parcel worked by Fabien Duveau was planted in 1960, and vines of that age give small crops of concentrated, thick-skinned Cabernet Franc. Farming is organic. The fruit is hand picked and sorted, fermented with indigenous yeast, and extracted gently by infusion rather than heavy working of the cap, before an extended élevage in older wood that firms the structure without adding oak flavour.

Deep and mineral with fine, chalky tannin; serve with roast lamb, beef, duck or game, decanted, at around 17 degrees.
