Description
Faiveley Meursault 1er Cru Charmes comes from the largest and best known premier cru of the Cote de Beaune's great white wine village.
Meursault has no grand cru, a quirk of the 1936 classification that has never much dented its standing, and its premier crus along the Puligny-facing side of the commune do the work instead. Les Charmes is the largest of them, divided into an upper and a lower section, Charmes Dessus and Charmes Dessous, on limestone soils that shift in depth as the slope falls away. Chardonnay is whole-bunch pressed, fermented and matured in oak barrels and left on lees, the method that made the village's reputation. Faiveley was founded at Nuits-Saint-Georges in 1825 and has passed through seven generations of the same family, assembling along the way one of the largest holdings of premier and grand cru land in Burgundy. Erwan Faiveley took charge in 2005 and oversaw a shift towards gentler handling in the cellar.
Serve at 12 to 13C with lobster, scallops, roast chicken, veal in cream or hard mountain cheese; it will develop over five to ten years.
