Description
Faiveley Vosne-Romanée is village-level red Burgundy from the commune that holds the most celebrated vineyards on earth.
Vosne-Romanee is home to Romanee-Conti, La Tache, Richebourg and La Romanee, and the eighteenth-century Abbe Courtepee's line that there are no common wines in Vosne has followed the village ever since. Its slope faces east on limestone and marl, and the village vineyards lie below and around that famous band of grand crus. Pinot Noir is the only grape. Faiveley was founded at Nuits-Saint-Georges in 1825 and has passed through seven generations of the same family, an unusual run of continuity in a region where holdings are endlessly divided by inheritance. Along the way it assembled one of the largest collections of premier and grand cru land in Burgundy, together with substantial vineyards in the Cote Chalonnaise. Erwan Faiveley took charge in 2005 and oversaw a shift towards gentler handling in the cellar and a new winery in Nuits.
Decant briefly and serve at 15 to 16C with duck, game birds, roast veal or mushroom dishes; a few years in bottle will do it good.
