Famille Hoppenot Beaujolais Blanc 2020

Famille Hoppenot Beaujolais Blanc is a one-off white from a grower's parcel at the northern edge of Beaujolais, made by a producer who owns no Chardonnay vines.

Beaujolais Blanc is a small corner of the appellation, planted to Chardonnay and concentrated in the north where the granite gives way to the limestone of the Mâconnais. Grégoire Hoppenot set up in Fleurie in 2018 after a career in the wine trade, and works almost entirely with Gamay from the cru vineyards around the village. This wine is the anomaly in the range: the domaine does not farm Chardonnay, but was offered a parcel by a grower at Crêches-sur-Saône, in the far north of Beaujolais just south of Mâcon, and took it. The site is closer in character to the southern Mâconnais than to the granite of the crus, and the wine is made in the same unfussy manner as the rest of the range.

Drink over the next two or three years. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled fish, chicken salad or a fresh goat's cheese.
