Famille Hugel Gentil 2024

Famille Hugel Gentil is an Alsace blend in an old regional style, bringing the noble grapes and the everyday ones together in one bottle.

Before Alsace settled into labelling wines by single variety, blends were the norm, and Gentil was the traditional name for the better ones. Hugel revived the term in the early 1990s, and the rules are strict: at least half the wine must come from the noble varieties, Riesling, Muscat, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer, with Sylvaner and Pinot Blanc making up the balance, each variety grown and vinified separately before blending. The Hugel family has been in Riquewihr since 1639, one of the longest unbroken runs of any wine family in France, and their cellars in the village still hold a cask dating from 1715. Blends of this kind were once the everyday wine of every household in Alsace.

Serve at around 8 to 10 degrees as an aperitif, or with charcuterie, tarte flambee, or lightly spiced Asian dishes.
