Description
Famille Hugel Pinot Gris Classic is a dry Alsace white from a family that has been making wine in Riquewihr since 1639.
Riquewihr sits in the Vosges rain shadow, which makes this one of the driest corners of France and allows long, slow ripening well into autumn. Pinot Gris has been grown here for centuries, for much of that time under the name Tokay d'Alsace, a label finally retired in 2007 under an agreement with Hungary. The Classic range is Hugel's everyday tier, drawn from vineyards around the village and made in a resolutely dry style, fermented and raised in the old oak foudres the family keeps in its cellars, without new wood and without malolactic fermentation, so the wine stays clean-lined. Pinot Gris ripens to more weight here than further north, which is why Alsace gives it serious vineyard land.
Serve at around 10 to 12 degrees with roast pork, mushroom dishes, smoked fish or a slice of terrine.
