Description
Famille Hugel Riesling Classic is a dry Alsace Riesling from one of the oldest wine families in France, based at Riquewihr since 1639.
Alsace has been French and German by turns, and its winemaking carries traces of both; Riesling is the grape that best expresses its patchwork of granite, limestone and sandstone soils. Riquewihr, a fortified village on the Vosges foothills, sits in a rain shadow that keeps the vineyards unusually dry and sunny for their latitude. The Classic range is the Hugel entry point, sourced from vineyards around the village, fermented dry and matured in large old oak casks that add no flavour of their own. Malolactic fermentation is avoided, which is the Alsace convention and keeps the wine taut. The family still works from the same cellars on the main street of the village.
Serve at around 8 to 10 degrees with trout, oysters, roast chicken or a plate of choucroute garnie.
