Description
Fitapreta Chão dos Eremitas Alicante Branco is a single-vineyard white made entirely from Alicante Branco, a pre-phylloxera Alentejo grape that had all but disappeared.
The vineyard came into the family's hands in 2018 and carries the name of the hermit monks who were pressing grapes on this flat ground in the fourteenth century. Granite soils and two streams running below the surface hold the temperature down when the summer turns fierce. Fruit arrives between three and four in the morning and goes directly to the press; roughly 40 per cent ferments in old barrels, the rest under temperature control in steel, and the wine spends twelve months on primary lees without stirring. Just 1,955 bottles were filled.
Grapefruit and white peach arrive first, trailed by a smoky gunpowder note and a broad, almost oily texture. Serve at 10–12°C alongside baked or pan-fried fish, or a simply roasted bird.
