Forest Hill Vineyard Cabernet Malbec 2024

Forest Hill Vineyard Cabernet Malbec brings together two classic Bordeaux varieties from the oldest vineyard in Western Australia's Great Southern.

West of Mount Barker, the vineyard was first planted in 1965 as a Department of Agriculture trial, and the success of its early Riesling and Cabernet helped launch winemaking across the region. The vines grow at 220 to 240 metres on ironstone gravel formed from ancient granite and gneiss, with afternoon breezes from the Southern Ocean and a long, mild growing season. Many of the vines are old and dry-grown, farmed with organic and regenerative methods that include cover crops, compost and grazing livestock. Cabernet Malbec is a recent addition to the range, pairing the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon with the dark fruit and plush texture of Malbec from separate estate parcels.

Serve at around 16 to 18 degrees with chargrilled lamb cutlets, beef short ribs or a mushroom and lentil pie. A short decant helps it open in its youth, and it has the concentration to age well for several years.
