François Chidaine Vin de France le Chenin d'Ailleurs 2018

François Chidaine Vin de France le Chenin d'Ailleurs is a Chenin Blanc made by a Loire producer from fruit grown in Limoux.

The name means Chenin from another place, and the story behind it starts with the 2016 frost, which cost François Chidaine most of his Loire Valley crop. The Fort family, friends and experienced growers in Limoux, offered him part of their harvest so he could still make wine, and the arrangement has continued since. Limoux sits in the foothills of the Pyrenees and is better known for sparkling wine, but its altitude and cooler nights suit Chenin well. Chidaine works the fruit in the spirit of his Montlouis wines, aiming for clarity and cut rather than weight, and the wine is bottled as Vin de France because the variety falls outside the local appellation rules. The result is a crystalline, lip-smacking white that carries the maker's Loire sensibility a long way south.

Drink now and over the next three or four years. Serve at 10-12°C with roast pork, mild curry or a plate of charcuterie.
