Description
François Labet Île de Beauté Pinot Noir is grown at 400 metres above the east coast of Corsica and made by the owner of Château de la Tour in Vougeot.
Pinot Noir is barely planted on Corsica, and this bottling under the island-wide Île de Beauté IGP is one of the few worth seeking out. François Labet, whose principal estate is Château de la Tour in the Clos de Vougeot, takes the fruit from a vineyard in the Haute-Corse department, 400 metres up above the town of Ghisonaccia. Altitude is what makes Pinot workable in a Mediterranean climate, holding the acidity and slowing the ripening. Labet works the fruit differently from his Burgundies, destemming fully instead of using whole bunches, then vinifying two-thirds in tank and the remainder in French oak. The wine is open and ready early, with more spice and forest-floor character than a Côte de Nuits red of the same age.
Drink now. Serve at 15-16°C with charcuterie, roast pork or grilled mushrooms.
