François Lamarche Grand Cru La Grande Rue 2016

François Lamarche La Grande Rue is a 1.65-hectare grand cru monopole running up the slope between La Tâche and La Romanée-Conti.

La Grande Rue takes its name from the small road that borders the vineyard as it climbs above Vosne-Romanée, and the site dates back to the fifteenth century. Its position is as good as any in Burgundy: La Tâche to the south, and La Romanée-Conti, La Romanée and Romanée-Saint-Vivant to the north. Geologically it is a continuation of La Tâche. The land came into Lamarche hands in 1933 and has been a family monopole ever since; after La Romanée it is the smallest of the Vosne grand crus. Clive Coates has written that it is a more delicate wine than La Tâche and closer to Romanée-Saint-Vivant, and Allen Meadows notes that its ageing curve most closely mirrors the latter. Tasted beside the domaine's Echézeaux and Clos de Vougeot, its extra depth and class are plain.

Give it ten years and expect it to hold for thirty. Serve at 16-18°C with roast game birds, beef fillet or truffled dishes.
