Description
François Lamarche Hautes-Côtes de Nuits comes from 1.5 hectares of east-facing limestone in the hills above Vosne-Romanée, planted in 1979.
The Hautes-Côtes de Nuits sits in the hills behind the famous slope, higher, cooler and later-ripening than the Côte itself, which in warm seasons has become an advantage rather than a handicap. Lamarche's holding is up above Vosne, on limestone-rich soils with a due east aspect, from vines planted in 1979 and now approaching 40 years of age. The domaine is best known for its Vosne grand crus, and the same hands and the same cellar are behind this wine: it was fermented with 30 per cent whole bunches for perfume and structure, then matured in used barriques, with no new oak involved. What it offers is the Lamarche signature of purity and floral lift in a lighter, earlier-drinking frame, at a fraction of the price of the wines from below.
Drinking now and holding for five or six years. Serve at 16-18°C with charcuterie, roast chicken or mushrooms on toast.
