Description
Frapin 1270 Grande Champagne is the house's entry cognac, named for the year the Frapin family first put down roots as vine growers in the Charente.
Grande Champagne is the first cru of Cognac, soft Campanian chalk whose eaux-de-vie mature slowly and live longest of all the region's crus. Frapin is unusual in drawing solely on vineyard it owns, some 240 hectares of Ugni Blanc around the Château de Fontpinot at Segonzac, where the family has farmed since 1270 and where everything from growing to bottling takes place. The base wine is distilled on its lees in small copper pot stills, and the eaux-de-vie age in Limousin oak in the estate's own humid cellars. For 1270 the blend is drawn from the younger end of the cellar and bottled at 40%, replacing what the house previously sold as its VS.
Bright and comparatively forward for a Grande Champagne, it works neat over a large piece of ice, lengthened with tonic, or as the base of a sidecar; serve cool rather than warmed.
