Description
Frapin Cognac 30 Year Old is a single-harvest Grande Champagne bottled at 41.8% after three decades in Limousin oak.
Grande Champagne is the first cru of Cognac, soft Campanian chalk whose eaux-de-vie mature slowly and live longest of all the region's crus. Frapin is unusual in drawing solely on vineyard it owns, some 240 hectares of Ugni Blanc around the Château de Fontpinot at Segonzac, where the family has farmed since 1270 and where everything from growing to bottling takes place. The base wine is distilled on its lees in small copper pot stills, and the eaux-de-vie age in Limousin oak in the estate's own humid cellars. Thirty years in cask is a long time even by Grande Champagne standards, and much of the original volume is lost to evaporation. As a declared single-harvest cognac the stock is kept apart under customs supervision throughout. It was bottled at 41.8%, near the strength the cask had settled to.
A cognac for the end of the evening, taken neat and slowly, and well suited to a cigar; serve at room temperature.
