Description
Frapin Extra XO Grande Champagne is one of the oldest bottlings in the house range, assembled from the estate's deepest reserves.
Grande Champagne is the first cru of Cognac, soft Campanian chalk whose eaux-de-vie mature slowly and live longest of all the region's crus. Frapin is unusual in drawing solely on vineyard it owns, some 240 hectares of Ugni Blanc around the Château de Fontpinot at Segonzac, where the family has farmed since 1270 and where everything from growing to bottling takes place. The base wine is distilled on its lees in small copper pot stills, and the eaux-de-vie age in Limousin oak in the estate's own humid cellars. Eaux-de-vie of this age have spent decades in old, long-used casks that give up almost no fresh oak character, and much of the volume has been lost to evaporation along the way, which is why so little is released. It is bottled at 40%.
A collector's after-dinner cognac to be taken neat and slowly; serve at room temperature in a small tulip glass.
