Description
Frapin VSOP Grande Champagne is a single-cru cognac made entirely from the family's own chalk-grown Ugni Blanc at Segonzac.
Grande Champagne is the first cru of Cognac, soft Campanian chalk whose eaux-de-vie mature slowly and live longest of all the region's crus. Frapin is unusual in drawing solely on vineyard it owns, some 240 hectares of Ugni Blanc around the Château de Fontpinot at Segonzac, where the family has farmed since 1270 and where everything from growing to bottling takes place. The base wine is distilled on its lees in small copper pot stills, and the eaux-de-vie age in Limousin oak in the estate's own humid cellars. VSOP requires a minimum of four years in wood, though on chalk soils of this quality the eaux-de-vie in the blend are given appreciably longer before assembly and bottling at 40%.
Rounder and more mellow than the entry cuvée while still fresh, it suits an after-dinner glass or a well made cognac and soda; serve at cellar temperature in a tulip glass.
