Description
Frederic & Daniel Brunier Le Pigeoulet Vin des Pays du Vaucluse is a Grenache-based country red from the Vaucluse, made by the family of Châteauneuf-du-Pape's Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe.
The Vaucluse spreads east of Châteauneuf-du-Pape towards Mont Ventoux, and its country appellation gives growers room to work outside the stricter cru boundaries. Frédéric and Daniel Brunier, of Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe on the La Crau plateau, draw Le Pigeoulet from vineyards on sand, clay and stone in this wider zone. Grenache Noir forms the core, filled out with Syrah, Carignan, Cinsault and Mourvèdre, the classic southern Rhône blend. Vinification is straightforward, with ageing in concrete and older wood rather than new oak, keeping the wine direct and unforced. It is the family's bottle for the table rather than the cellar.
Serve at around 15 degrees, a touch below room temperature, with charcuterie, grilled lamb, ratatouille or pizza. Best enjoyed in its youth.
