Freycinet Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2024

Freycinet Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot is a bold cool-climate red built on the three classic Bordeaux grapes and grown on Tasmania's east coast.

Geoff and Susan Bull planted this site near Apslawn in the late 1970s, making it one of the first vineyards on the island's east coast, and three generations of the family have worked it since. The estate describes the vineyard as a sheltered amphitheatre, and that pocket of extra warmth lets Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc reach a depth of flavour unusual for Tasmania. Extended maceration and time in French oak barriques add cigar box notes over blackcurrant, plum and black olive fruit. The 2024 is a young release, generous and richly flavoured, with the structure to develop further with bottle age.

Serve at around 16 to 18 degrees, ideally after a short decant. Roast lamb, barbecued steak, hearty casseroles and strong cheeses are the matches the winery recommends, and a few years in a cool cellar will soften it further.
