Description
Fritz Haag Kätzchen Trocken GG is a dry single-vineyard Mosel Riesling from the smaller slope beside the Juffer at Brauneberg.
The Kätzchen lies on the Brauneberg hill next to the celebrated Juffer, on grey Devonian slate with a slightly deeper, cooler profile that tends to give a broader, rounder Riesling than its neighbour. Grosses Gewächs is the VDP's designation for a dry wine from a classified Grosse Lage site, with yields capped, hand harvesting required and the wine held back until the September after the vintage. Fritz Haag ferments this wine with ambient yeasts in stainless steel and traditional Fuder cask, then leaves it on its full lees over winter before bottling. Residual sugar is 5 grams per litre, so the wine is unambiguously dry.
Dry, textured and stony, it suits river fish, roast chicken and veal; serve at 10 to 12 degrees.
