G d'Estournel Médoc 2020

G d'Estournel Médoc is a Left Bank Bordeaux made by the team behind one of Saint-Estephe's great classified estates.

The Medoc appellation covers the northern end of the peninsula, beyond Saint-Estephe, where the deep gravel banks give way to heavier clay and limestone and Merlot takes a larger share of the blend than it does further south. This northern stretch holds no classified growths at all, and its wines have long sold for a fraction of the prices fetched a few kilometres down the road. Cos d'Estournel, the second growth at Saint-Estephe with its distinctive pagodas, extended its work into this northern stretch in the early 2000s, applying the same standards of selection and winemaking to vineyards well outside the classified heartland. G d'Estournel is the more immediate of the wines that came out of that venture, blending Merlot with both Cabernets and spending a shorter time in oak, made to be enjoyed without long cellaring.

Serve at around 17 degrees with steak, roast lamb or a simple cassoulet.
