Description
Garagiste Le Stagiaire Gewürztraminer is a single-barrel Gewürztraminer from Tuerong on the Mornington Peninsula.
Gewürztraminer has never been fashionable in Australia, and it is close to unheard of on the Mornington Peninsula, which makes a thirty-year-old parcel of it worth protecting. Yields are minute, with bunches averaging twenty to thirty grams in a good year, and 2025 produced just enough for one 500-litre barrel. Half the crop went in as whole bunches and fermented that way for three weeks, the carbonic element lifting perfume and building texture, since the aim is mouthfeel from process instead of sugar ripeness on the vine. The other half was pressed as bunches into seasoned wood, then seven months on lees together.
Rose petal and rosewater, meadow florals and spice, with ripe fruit beneath and a succulent, faintly phenolic texture kept tight by acidity. Serve at 11 to 12 degrees. It is a wine for a long, considered dinner, or for a very ripe washed-rind cheese.
