Garagiste Le Stagiaire Grenache Blanc 2025

Garagiste Le Stagiaire Grenache Blanc is a Heathcote white made from a small Colbinabbin parcel.

Colbinabbin, in the north of Heathcote, is better known for Shiraz grown on its ancient Cambrian soils, so a white off that ground is worth a look: here red dirt over limestone, with a south-east aspect that keeps ripening slow. The Rathjen family have farmed it since the 1850s and keep yields low across the property, which is why the parcel comes to only a couple of tonnes. Picking at 12 to 12.5 per cent potential alcohol is a deliberate choice, because the aim across this range is fine mouthfeel with freshness intact, not weight. Pressing as whole bunches into seasoned 500-litre puncheons is all the winemaking it gets.

Delicate and perfumed, with white flowers, nectarine and a salty, textural finish that keeps calling for another sip. Serve at 11 degrees. Good with grilled prawns, chicken and almonds, a vegetable tart, or a young goat cheese.
