Garagiste Merricks Chardonnay 2025

Garagiste Merricks Chardonnay is a single-site Chardonnay from the cool southern slopes of Merricks on the Mornington Peninsula.

After a run of cool, tight-yielding seasons, 2025 finally handed Mornington growers a crop worth talking about, and the mood at the end of harvest was cheerful. Fruit from the 29-year-old vines on grey loam and red ferrosol was picked and sorted by hand, pressed as bunches, and left to ferment spontaneously on heavy solids in François Frères puncheons of 500 litres. A small fraction went through malolactic conversion, then the wine spent ten months on full gross lees without stirring, the long and patient contact Barney Flanders relies on for texture. Merricks remains one of the benchmark Chardonnay sites in Victoria.

Fleshy and generous, with white peach, lemon pith and a flinty saline edge, and the tension and clarity are all present. Serve at 11 degrees, or a touch warmer if you want the texture to show. Try it with roast chicken, oysters or a smoked trout salad.
