Garagiste Merricks Pinot Noir 2024

Garagiste Merricks Pinot Noir is a Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir raised ten months in barrel on gross lees.

A third whole bunches has become the settled preference for this wine, and 2024 delivered the fruit quality to support it. The vines, now 28 years old and facing north on grey loam and red ferrosol, cropped a little more generously than the year before. Ferments started on their own and ran with bunches and whole berries together, extraction was gentle, and the wine spent ten months in barrel with a fifth of it new. Stem handling is a particular skill of Barney Flanders, and here the savoury element balances the natural power of Merricks fruit without ever dominating it.

Deep and layered, with dark berries, spice, flowers and a mineral lick, grippy structure and a long, lifted finish. Serve at 16 degrees, decanted. Roast duck is the obvious call; braised beef cheek or a mushroom pie work just as well.
