Garagiste Merricks Rosé 2025

Garagiste Merricks Rosé is a pale, textural Pinot Noir rosé from the Mornington Peninsula.

Rosé is often an afterthought in Australia, made from whatever is left over. Not here: the fruit comes from a specific south-facing Pinot Noir block at Merricks, hand-picked and hand-sorted before a slow whole-bunch pressing. From the press it went to old puncheons for a natural ferment with no temperature control, sitting on full solids throughout, then rested seven months on lees before bottling. The method is identical to the one Barney Flanders uses for his white wines, which is exactly why the wine carries so much texture for its colour.

Light in the glass and pretty on the nose, with strawberry, watermelon rind and a faint spice. Dry, lively and a little grippy on the close. Serve at 8 to 10 degrees alongside grilled prawns, a niçoise salad or a plate of soft cheese.
