Garagiste Terre De Feu Pinot Noir 2024

Garagiste Terre De Feu Pinot Noir is a foot-trodden, whole-bunch Pinot Noir from half an acre of Merricks Grove.

Arguably the most divisive wine Barney Flanders makes, and deliberately so. A jagged pocket of red clay darts through this part of Merricks Grove, the vines above it set smaller bunches, and since 2013 the fruit has been bottled alone. Sorting is rigorous in the vineyard and again at the winery. From there the whole crop goes in as intact bunches with a splash of carbonic, and in 2024 the grapes were gently foot-trodden before fermenting naturally on skins for close to a month. A quarter of the barrels were new, the wine rested ten months on gross lees, and it was bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Intensely floral and earthy, with rose, black tea, wet moss and smouldering pinecone over dark fruit. Structured and long. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees after decanting, with game, roast duck or mushrooms cooked in butter and garlic.
