Georges Duboeuf Chiroubles 2022

Georges Duboeuf Chiroubles is a Gamay from the highest of the ten Beaujolais crus, a village perched above Fleurie and Morgon.

Chiroubles is the smallest and loftiest of the crus, its vineyards climbing to around four hundred metres on sandy, decomposed pink granite. The altitude and the light soils give a wine of noticeably finer build than the crus below it, and Chiroubles has long been the one Beaujolais insiders reach for when they want the region at its most delicate. The village also honours Victor Pulliat, the nineteenth century viticulturist who worked here on grafting as the answer to phylloxera. Duboeuf, based at Romanèche-Thorins since 1964, selects from growers across the appellation. Gamay is hand harvested and fermented in the semi-carbonic style.

Serve lightly chilled at about 13 degrees with charcuterie, roast poultry or grilled fish; it is the cru to reach for when a lighter red is called for, and is best drunk within its first few years.
