Description
Gérard Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a Grenache-led red from sandy soils at Maucoil, raised without any new oak and bottled in magnum.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape is the largest of the southern Rhône crus, and the Charvin holding sits in the sandy northern sector at Maucoil rather than on the famous galets terraces, which is part of why the wines are so perfumed and so light on their feet for the appellation. The blend is heavily Grenache, with Syrah, Mourvèdre and a little Vaccarèse in support. Farming is by hand and without herbicides, fermentation runs on indigenous yeast in concrete, and the wine is raised in concrete tank and old foudre with no new wood at any stage. The estate has become a reference for the pure, unforced style of Châteauneuf, and magnum is the format collectors look for.
Full-bodied but fragrant rather than heavy, it suits roast lamb, game and daube; decant and serve at around 17 degrees.
