Gérard Charvin Côtes du Rhône Le Poutet 1.5L MAGNUM 2022

Gérard Charvin Le Poutet is the Côtes du Rhône of a benchmark Châteauneuf-du-Pape estate, made in magnum.

The Charvin family farms at Maucoil in the northern sector of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and Le Poutet is its Côtes du Rhône, made from parcels lying just outside the cru boundary on sandy soils mixed with galets. Grenache dominates, as it does in every wine the family makes, with a little Syrah for structure. The estate works by hand and without herbicides, and the cellar is resolutely traditional: fermentation with indigenous yeast in concrete, minimal handling, and ageing in tank so that no oak reaches the finished wine. In practice it is the same approach and much the same hands as the estate's Châteauneuf, applied to younger vines and lighter soils.

Medium-bodied, supple and peppery, it suits grilled meats, sausages and tomato-based dishes; serve at about 16 degrees.
