Description
Gilles Robin Crozes-Hermitage Alberic is the estate's old vine Syrah, fermented with whole bunches and raised in demi-muids.
This is the domaine's flagship red, named for Gilles Robin's grandfather, and it comes from the oldest Syrah on the property in Les Chassis, the stony glacial terrace south of Tain where rounded galets over clay give ripe but structured fruit. The vines are more than thirty years old, the fruit is fermented with 100 per cent whole bunches, and the wine is aged in demi-muids. Keeping every stem in the ferment adds aromatic lift, a savoury edge and a finer tannic frame, while the demi-muid, at 600 litres roughly double the size of a barrique, gives slow oxygenation with far less oak flavour than a small new barrel. The estate is farmed organically.
Structured and savoury with the pepper of northern Rhone Syrah, it suits roast lamb, duck and game; serve at around 17 degrees after a decant.
