Description
Gilles Robin Crozes-Hermitage blanc Les Marelles is a Roussanne-led white from the gravel terraces south of the hill of Hermitage.
Crozes-Hermitage is the largest appellation of the northern Rhone, wrapping around Tain and running south across a broad glacial terrace of rounded stones and clay, quite different from the granite of the hill itself. Whites are a minority here and are made from Marsanne and Roussanne. This cuvee reverses the usual proportions, with 60 per cent Roussanne to 40 per cent Marsanne, which gives a more perfumed and finer boned wine than the standard Marsanne-dominant style. Domaine Gilles Robin farms organically from its base at Mercurol in Les Chassis, working the whites without weighty new oak so the fruit keeps its definition.
Fresh and gently aromatic, it goes with grilled fish, roast vegetables, chicken and softer cheeses; serve at around 11 degrees.
