Gilles Robin Crozes-Hermitage Papillon 2024

Gilles Robin Crozes-Hermitage Papillon is an unoaked Syrah from twenty to thirty year old vines on the Chassis terrace.

Les Chassis is the gravel plain south of Tain, a bed of rounded alpine stones over clay that stores daytime heat and ripens Syrah evenly. Domaine Gilles Robin has its base at Mercurol in this sector and farms organically. Papillon is the estate's fresh, early drinking cuvee, drawn from vines of twenty to thirty years and raised entirely without oak ageing, so the fermentation vessel and not the barrel shapes it. That keeps the Syrah's dark fruit and black pepper in the foreground and the tannins supple, in the direct style of Crozes-Hermitage that made the appellation's reputation as the northern Rhone's everyday red.

Juicy and peppery for drinking young, it suits charcuterie, grilled sausages, roast chicken and hard cheeses; serve at around 16 degrees, or lightly cooled.
