Description
Gilles Robin Hermitage blanc is pure Marsanne from forty year old vines in the Les Diognieres sector of the hill.
The hill of Hermitage is a single granite outcrop above Tain, barely 130 hectares in all, and its white wines are among the longest lived in France. Les Diognieres sits towards the eastern end of the hill, where the granite is overlaid with loess and clay and the wines gain flesh and breadth. This bottling is 100 per cent Marsanne from vines of around forty years, a grape that gives low acidity, real weight and a waxy, nutty character that turns honeyed and toasted with age. Domaine Gilles Robin farms organically and keeps oak influence restrained so that site rather than barrel leads.
Full bodied and better with food than as an aperitif, it suits lobster, roast veal, poultry in cream and mature cheeses; serve at around 12 degrees.
