Gilles Robin Hermitage rouge 2023

Gilles Robin Hermitage rouge comes from vines of more than forty-five years in Les Bessards, the granite heart of the hill.

Hermitage is a single south facing hill above Tain, small enough to walk across in an afternoon, and its climats each contribute something different. Les Bessards, at the western end, is bare granite, and it is the sector that gives the appellation's reds their spine, their tannin and their capacity to age for decades. This bottling comes from vines of more than forty-five years there. Syrah is the only red grape, and the traditional treatment is a long, patient extraction and maturation in older wood so that the granite structure is not overlaid with oak. Powerful and tightly wound in youth, it repays cellaring and suits beef, game and truffle dishes; serve at around 17 degrees, decanted.
