Description
Gilles Robin Saint-Joseph blanc Petite Pierre is a Marsanne-led white from the granite terraces of the northern Rhone.
Domaine Gilles Robin is based at Mercurol in the Chassis sector of Crozes-Hermitage, where Gilles took over the family vines and built a reputation for precise, unforced northern Rhone wines; the estate is farmed organically. Saint-Joseph lies across the river on the right bank, a long ribbon of steep decomposed granite where whites make up only a small part of production. This cuvee is blended 70 per cent Marsanne to 30 per cent Roussanne: Marsanne supplies the broad, waxy, almond-like core and Roussanne lifts it with perfume and acidity. It is made without heavy oak so that the granite character stays legible.
Medium bodied and quietly textural, it suits roast chicken, white fish in butter sauce and soft cheeses; serve at around 11 degrees.
