Girlan Alto Adige Lagrein 2021

Girlan Alto Adige Lagrein is a mountain red made from the region's own dark-skinned variety, raised briefly in large wood and concrete.

Lagrein is native to Alto Adige and, in the right hands, gives the region its most striking reds: deeply coloured, firm and savoury, but held in check by altitude and cool nights. Girlan is a cooperative based at Cornaiano, near Bolzano, working with growers across the province. The fruit for this bottling comes from the sandy soils of the Bassa Atesina, a canton of the Südtiroler Unterland in the southern part of the region, where the warmer conditions of the valley floor allow Lagrein to ripen fully. After fermentation the wine is raised for five months in large wooden barrels and concrete vats, a short and deliberately neutral élevage that keeps the emphasis on fruit and structure rather than oak. The result is a medium-bodied red in the local idiom, firm-edged and built for the table.

Drink over the next four or five years, with speck, braised beef or a mushroom polenta. Serve at 16 to 18°C.
