Description
Girlan Alto Adige Lagrein is a varietal bottling of the region's darkest indigenous red, raised in large wood and concrete.
Lagrein is native to Alto Adige and, handled well, gives the region its most striking reds: deeply coloured, firmly structured, yet rarely heavy. Girlan draws this bottling from vineyards in the sandy Bassa Atesina, part of the Südtiroler Unterland at the warmer southern end of the province, where the variety ripens fully. The wine is raised for five months in large wooden barrels and concrete vats, a combination that rounds the tannins without imposing oak flavour. At 12.5 per cent alcohol it stays light on its feet, and the palate is fleshy and supple, with integrated tannins, lively acidity and a graphite edge that is typical of the grape. It is a good introduction to a variety still under-represented on Australian lists.
Approachable now and holding for four or five years, it works with a juicy leg of lamb, braised beef shin or hard alpine cheese. Serve at 16-18°C.
