Girlan Alto Adige Lagrein 2023

Girlan Alto Adige Lagrein is a fresh, cask-and-concrete-raised example of Alto Adige's dark native red.

Lagrein is indigenous to the Bolzano basin and, at its best, produces some of Alto Adige's most striking reds: deeply coloured, firm-edged and marked by a graphite savouriness that sets it apart from the region's lighter Schiava. Girlan is a co-operative cellar based at Cornaiano, drawing on growers across the province. This bottling comes from vineyards in the sandy Bassa Atesina terroir, a canton of the mountainous Südtiroler Unterland where warmer days and cool alpine nights hold acidity in place. The wine is raised in large wooden barrels and concrete vats for five months, a short and deliberately neutral élevage that keeps the fruit to the front. Bottled at 13 per cent alcohol, it has an accessible push and pull of sweet summer berries, savoury spice and graphite, with floral-scented fruit, juicy-ripe tannins and lively freshness.

Drink over the next four or five years. Serve at 16-18°C with grilled and roast meats, game or a hard mountain cheese.
