Description
Girlan Alto Adige Lagrein comes from the sandy Bassa Atesina and is raised in large wood and concrete for five months.
Lagrein is native to Alto Adige and is at its best on the warm valley-floor sands around Bolzano, where it gives dark, savoury reds with firm but ripe tannin. Girlan is a long-established co-operative based at Cornaiano, above the Adige valley, working with growers across the province. The fruit for this bottling comes from vineyards within the Bassa Atesina, a canton of the Südtiroler Unterland whose sandy soils suit the variety's need for heat. Ageing was five months, split between large wooden barrels and concrete vats, which rounds the tannin without adding obvious oak. The wine combines sweet summer berry fruit with savoury spice and a meadow-herb note, and keeps a fleshy palate and lively freshness, with juicy tannin that fills out against food.
Drink over the next five years; serve at 16-18C with grilled and roast meats, game or hard alpine cheese.
