Description
Girlan's Alto Adige Pinot Bianco is a straight varietal white from a co-operative that has worked the slopes around Cornaiano since 1923.
Pinot Bianco — Weissburgunder to the German-speaking growers here — is one of the five varieties Cantina Girlan concentrates on, alongside Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Schiava and Pinot Nero, and it is valued for the way it holds acidity and shows the site rather than itself. The cellar was founded in 1923 by 24 growers with 25 hectares between them and now works with roughly 200 winegrowing families across about 220 hectares in the Oltradige and Bassa Atesina, on lean gravel and loam soils facing south and sheltered from the north. Cellarmaster Gerhard Kofler puts the aromatic definition of these wines down to the wide gap between day and night temperatures, above all in autumn. Fermentation is cool and in stainless steel, with time on fine lees and no oak.
Drink now and over the next three or four years. Serve at 10–12°C with grilled white fish, chicken schnitzel or a young alpine cheese.
