Girlan Alto Adige Pinot Bianco 2022

Girlan Alto Adige Pinot Bianco is a hand-picked hillside white from Cornaiano, made almost entirely in tank.

Most Alto Adige producers make a Pinot Grigio for export, but Girlan's reputation in this range rests on Pinot Bianco, a variety the region handles better than almost anywhere. The fruit is hand-picked from the mineral-rich hillsides around Cornaiano at 450 to 500 metres, where altitude and good air movement keep the acidity firm. The juice is fermented in tank, with ten per cent taken through malolactic conversion to add a little flesh to the wine's cool alpine frame; there is no oak. The result is precise rather than weighty, built on pulpy citrus and apple with a pithy, mineral finish, and it is the sort of white that works as well before a meal as with one.

Drink young, within three or four years, with antipasti, grilled fish or a simple risotto. Serve at 10-12°C.
