Description
Girlan Platt & Riegl is a single-vineyard Alto Adige Pinot Bianco grown at 550 metres on the Appiano Monte.
Alto Adige, the German-speaking province at Italy's northern edge, is one of the country's most reliable sources of alpine white wine, and the Appiano Monte is widely held to be among its premier terroirs. Girlan draws this wine from a single site called Platt & Riegl, on gravelly, mineral-rich soils in the lee of the snow-capped Mendola Mountain. Altitude and sun exposure together set the style: ripe fruit held in check by cool nights and a long hang time. The vines are old and the fruit is hand-harvested. Malolactic fermentation is allowed only in part, and half the wine is vinified in a large 5,000-litre oak cask, which builds texture without introducing oak flavour, while the balance stays in steel.
Approachable on release but capable of five or more years in bottle. Serve at 10-12°C with trout, veal schnitzel or a plate of speck and mountain cheese.
