Description
Girlan Platt & Riegl is a single-vineyard Pinot Bianco grown at 550 metres on the gravels of Appiano Monte.
Alto Adige is Italy's most reliable source of Pinot Bianco, and Appiano Monte is regarded as one of its premier terroirs. Platt & Riegl is a single site within it, sitting at 550 metres in the lee of the snow-capped Mount Mendola on gravelly, mineral-rich soils. Elevation and stony ground both shape the wine, as do the old vines and hand-harvesting. In the cellar, partial malolactic conversion softens the acidity and half the wine is vinified in a 5,000-litre oak cask, a format large enough to add texture without wood flavour. The outcome is more satin-textured and mineral than Pinot Bianco usually manages, with the alpine freshness of the region intact underneath. It is a good argument for a variety that rarely gets a single-vineyard treatment.
Drink over the next five to seven years with roast chicken, veal or a creamy risotto. Serve at 10-12°C.
