Description
Platt & Riegl is Girlan's single-variety Pinot Bianco, drawn from vineyards at around 600 metres in the Appiano Monte.
Alto Adige DOC covers the alpine valleys around Bolzano, where altitude and a wide day-to-night temperature swing give white wines an unusual combination of ripeness and definition. Girlan is a growers' co-operative at Cornaiano, and this cuvée comes from two of its highest and most esteemed sites, in Cornaiano and on the Eppan Berg, planted in the gravelly, mineral-rich soils of the Appiano Monte. In the lee of Mount Mendola the rocky ground, the elevation and the age of the vines do much of the work. The fruit is picked by hand, the wine goes through a partial malolactic conversion, and half of it is fermented and matured in 5,000-litre oak casks, the rest staying in stainless steel. That handling gives a more satin-textured, mineral wine than Pinot Blanc usually delivers, with orchard fruit succulence, chalky white stone fruit and a saline, grapefruit-edged close.
It is drinking well now and will hold for four or five years; try it with trout, veal schnitzel or a mushroom risotto. Serve at 10-12°C.
