Girlan IGT 448 Bianco Vigneti d Dolomiti 2020

Girlan's 448 Bianco is an Alto Adige blend named for the altitude at which every parcel of its fruit is grown.

Girlan is a growers' co-operative founded in 1923 at Cornaiano, in the hills south of Bolzano, and it has long been one of the more reliable sources of white wine in the Südtirol. The blend is half Pinot Bianco with the remainder split between Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, all drawn from mineral-rich hillside sites at 448 metres above sea level, which is where the label gets its number. There is a second joke in the name: quattro quattro otto is local shorthand for hurry up. Alpine altitude and cool nights hold acidity and aromatic detail in fruit that ripens fully during long, bright days, and the wine is vinified in stainless steel to keep it fresh and unencumbered. The result is juicy and aromatic, made for drinking rather than keeping, and typical of the crisp, precise style the region does so well.

Drink it within two or three years, with antipasti, grilled fish, asparagus or a plate of speck. Serve at 10-12°C.
