Description
Girlan's 448 Rosso takes its name from the altitude — 448 metres — at which its grapes are grown in the Alto Adige.
Bottled as IGT Vigneti delle Dolomiti, the wine is crafted predominantly from two indigenous Südtirol varieties, Lagrein and Schiava, with Pinot Noir completing the blend. The Lagrein comes from the deep, sandy soils of the Bassa Atesina, a warmer pocket of the valley that suits a variety needing heat to ripen its tannins fully. The Pinot Noir and Schiava are grown on the hillside vineyards of Cornaiano, in sunny, well-aired sites where the diurnal swing between alpine nights and bright days keeps the aromatics fresh. Fermentation takes place in tank and in old barrels, after which the wine completes its maturation in concrete vats — a choice that preserves the perfume and keeps the texture supple rather than adding oak weight. The result is a perfumed, fleshy young red with ripe tannins.
Drink now and over the next four years, at 15–17°C, with speck and rye bread, roast pork with fennel, or mushroom pasta.
