Girlan IGT 448 Rosso Vigneti d Dolomiti 2020

Girlan's 448 Rosso blends two indigenous Südtirol varieties with Pinot Noir, all from vineyards at around 448 metres above sea level.

Girlan is a growers' co-operative at Cornaiano, south of Bolzano, working the hillside sites of the Alto Adige. The altitude that gives the wine its name is what makes the blend work: Lagrein and Schiava are the two local red grapes, the first dark and firmly tannic, the second pale and light, while Pinot Noir has long since proved itself in these terroirs. The Lagrein comes from the deep sandy soils of the Bassa Atesina, a warmer pocket well suited to ripening a variety that can turn austere when it is picked short. The Pinot Nero and Schiava are grown on the hillside vineyards of Cornaiano, in sunny, well-ventilated sites where cool alpine nights hold the aromatics. Fermentation takes place in tank and old barrels, and the wine finishes its maturation in concrete vats, which keeps the fruit vibrant and the tannins soft.

Drink over the next three to five years, lightly chilled if you like. Good with speck, roast pork or mushroom dishes; serve at 15-16°C.
