Description
Girlan 448 Rosso takes its name from the roughly 448 metres above sea level at which its grapes are grown in the Alto Adige.
Bottled under the Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT, the wine blends two indigenous Südtirol varieties, Lagrein and Schiava, with Pinot Noir, which has proved well suited to the terroirs of Alto Adige. The Lagrein comes from the deep, sandy soils of the Bassa Atesina, a warmer pocket ideal for ripening that variety, while the Pinot Noir and Schiava grow on the hillside vineyards around Cornaiano, in sunny, well-aired sites above the valley. Girlan is a co-operative based at Cornaiano working with growers across the province. Fermentation takes place in tank and old barrels, and the wines complete their maturation in concrete vats, an approach that keeps the fruit fresh and the tannin soft rather than adding oak weight.
Drink young, within three or four years; serve lightly chilled at 14-16C with speck, roast pork or a mushroom pasta.
