Girlan IGT Vigneti delle Dolomiti 448 Rosso 2022

Girlan 448 Rosso is an Alpine red blend named for the altitude, around 448 metres, at which its grapes grow.

Alto Adige, or Südtirol, is Italy's northernmost wine region, where German-speaking growers work steep, well-aerated sites and the reds tend towards perfume and freshness rather than weight. Girlan is a co-operative based at Cornaiano with a long record in the zone. This bottling blends two indigenous varieties, Lagrein and Schiava, with Pinot Noir, a grape the region has long suited. The Lagrein comes from the deep sandy soils of the Bassa Atesina, a warmer terroir that ripens the variety reliably, while the Pinot Noir and Schiava are grown on the sunny hillside vineyards around Cornaiano. Fermentation takes place in tank and old barrels, and maturation is completed in concrete vats, which keeps the fruit clear and the tannins fine. The wine carries the Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT designation rather than a DOC.

Drink over the next three to four years with speck and rye bread, roast pork or mushroom dishes. Serve at 16°C, or slightly cooler in summer.
